An exceptionally rare find
The Pike & Dean Patent Plane is an exceedingly rare antique woodworking tool. Patented on March 23, 1875 (Patent #161,213) by Asahel H. Dean of Philadelphia, these metallic planes are highly prized by tool collectors due to their unusual design and extreme scarcity.
The Ring Lever Cap: The most distinct characteristic of the Pike & Dean plane is its unique lever cap design, which features a loop or "ring" cast into the left cheek. This lever system was designed to lock the cutter in place while making blade replacement easy.
All of the planes feature "PIKE & DEAN’S PAT. MAR.23.75" stamped into the side of the cast-iron body.
Because Pike & Dean was a smaller partnership rather than a mass-production juggernaut like Stanley, very few of these planes have survived in their original, complete condition.
The finer details - 7” long with a 1” 3/4 iron. There is a nice clear stamp. There are very minor chips at the rear of the sole. Minor chips on the handle and a tiny crack at the base of the front knob. All in all it’s in exceptional condition for something that’s 150+ years old.
A once in a lifetime chance to own an incredibly rare infil plane, which will be the pride of any collection.
